Forno Di Zoldo

Noteworthy is that Forno di Zoldo is one of the municipalities within the National Park of the Belluno Dolomites. This corporation deals with the protection of this microcosm through scientific research, environmental education, restoration and dissemination of the so-called "modell- hut", the use of modern technologies to exploit alternative energy sources, the reintroduction of the Marmot, the study of the eagle, the protection of biodiversity and anthropological values and more.
In the village of Pieve is the seat of the ladin group “Grop of Zoldo”, a cultural association which has the aim to protect, enhance and develop the local ladin language.
The capital city of the valley, peaceful resort and residence at 848 m, in the past was first administered by the medieval feudal bishop of Belluno and passed then to the Venetian Republic.
From the geographical point of view the territory is located in the inner alpine mountains, typical for the Dolomites and the municipality of Forno di Zoldo is located in the central part of the valley of Mae. The date of birth of the Community of Zoldo can be located around August 1224, when it got the right to be represented by two consuls in the Council of Nobles of Belluno.
As the name already reveals, due to the presence of furnaces for metal, Forno di Zoldo was an important metallurgical center (as evidence of this, today you can visit the Museum of the nail).
It is assumed, that the steel industry of Zoldo existed since 1200. It is apparent, that there was a bakery oven, which probably elaborated the pyrite of adjacent mines.
In the locality of Pieve you will find the ancient church of San Floriano, founded in the tenth century, with structures and Gothic frescoes and two tables of the fifteenth century of Girolamo da Trento. Besides, it contains the Altar of souls, sculpted by Andrea Brustolon between 1682 and 1685.
